S is for Sangria, Great Summer Drink

Summertime is almost around the corner.  When summer comes, one of my favorite things is when the family gathers together for the annual barbecue. We hardly have time to see watch other throughout the year with our demanding schedules, and so, when we finally get to meet up, it is always a good time.

My sister always prepares a plethora of foods and drinks for the family; and a great variety. The drinks are always plentiful also.  One of the drinks I suggest this year is Sangria. I think I will make it and bring it for the family to enjoy.

For one, Sangria is a really tasty drink that goes a long way.  It is not so hard to make because it has ingredients in it that are easy to find and most likely might already be there in the household; well maybe.

It can be prepared with either red or white wine.  I think I like the White Sangria more than the red, but either way, it is a delicious drink. Add Brandy to the mix. The amount varies depending on how many people you are serving. For six people, add one cup.  One large carafe can hold about nine drinks in it.

Finally, add a cup of orange juice and then add your fruit.  You can add anything like mandarin oranges, diced apples, cubed pineapple, maybe even grapes or whatever fruits you may love.  The best thing about the fruit is that it soaks up the alcohol so after you finish your drink, you still have a nice treat waiting for you at the bottom of your glass.

Many people like to make punches and have it in a bowl on a table.  I think it would be better in a pitcher or a carafe because then it could remain fresh and it can stay in the cooler until someone is actually interested in having some.  Especially since barbecues are conducted in the hot sun. Sangria tastes best when it is cold.

Sangria is a nice summer drink and one that I think will have your guests smiling. But if you do decide to drink while you are at the barbecue, please replenish your body with plenty of water to stay hydrated because you will be under the hot sun perspiring which means your body will be losing water, even if you are not aware of it and can make you dehydrated. Besides the Sangria,  water is also a delicious and very important summer drink also. So make sure to drink plenty of it. But overall, have a great time. I think this summer will be a great summer and I am looking forward to it.

P is For PG-13 Drinks

I like a drink every once in a while. I wouldn’t consider myself a lush but I enjoy a nice cocktail or two every now and then. But I’m not a fish. I drink in moderation and mostly among friends on a social level.

My little cousin turns 13 years old this week. I remember seeing him as a baby and he was a beautiful little boy then, but now, he is growing into a respectable young man and it is awesome to see.

For his birthday, I took him out to the Planetarium which is a wondeful Science exhibit located inside of the American Museum of Natural History on West 81st Street and Seventh Avenue in Manhattan, where we watched a short film entitled, “Journey to the Stars.”  Afterwards, went to have some grub at Dallas BBQ’s on 42nd Street.

My cousin looked at the menu and the first thing he saw were the frozen drinks and asked the waiter for a Strawberry Daiquiri. I made sure to stress to the waiter to make it a virgin one. For myself, I ordered a Miami Vice which is an interesting mix of a Pina Colada and a Strawberry Daiquiri in one. We got the Texas style drinks and they always have such an appealing look to them.  When we got the drinks back, my cousin asked, “Is there Bacardi in my drink?”

Because it was a virgin drink, it did not have alcohol in it. It is what I consider to be a PG-13 drink. You can also virgin a Pina Colada which is pretty cool. You get the flavor minus the alcohol. What was even more interesting was that my little cousin told me he was just joking, knew that it was a virgin and then explained to me what a virgin was; on two different levels. SMH!  Kids say the darndest things. But I know one thing, after I heard his explanation and felt myself about to start lecturing and questioning, I was happy that my Miami Vice wasn’t.

Apples Make a Healthy Snack

Apples are great fruit.  I used to not appreciate them as much because of how cold they are against my teeth. But when they say that an apple a day keeps the doctors away, I think there is truth to that.

Fruit in general is healthier than any snack that you can ever decide to have.  And eating the actual fruit is way better than pouring juice into a glass; even when the juice you are having is 100% juice.

Have you ever tried apples and peanut butter?  It is a great combination and tastes delicious. If you are the type that gets hungry while you work and need a snack and reach for chips or cookies instead of something that will truly benefit your body, maybe you should try this snack because it is easy to prepare, not messy to eat and also has great nutritional value to it. And it tastes great.

All you need is one apple, a knife and a spoonful of peanut butter that you can easily wrap up in aluminum foil. This makes a great snack, breakfast or even lunch because it is a combination of protein and carbs.
I don’t know about you, but after hearing about the family who ate fast food every day for nine months because their apartment was not being supplied with gas, it made me really think about my own spending habits when it comes to food. They spent over $7,000 on their fast food bill. that's a lot of money.  I think that eating something affordable and from home sounds just about right for me. A bag of apples costs less than a meal at any of the fast food chains you can think of.  I think I’d rather go bobbing for apples. How about you?
